The Discovery Center was established in 1982 by Anne Tyndall, who received
her Masters Degree in Montessori Education from Xavier University in 1977.
She is certified by the American Montessori Society. Housed in an historic building in Olde West Chester, dating back to the early 1800’s,
this former stage coach stop is now the Discovery Center and is based on the
philosophy of Maria Montessori. 2, 3, and 5

What Is Montessori?
 Montessori is a philosophy with the fundamental tenet that a child learns best within a social environment which supports each child’s unique development. Maria Montessori believed learning was best acquired in an atmosphere of respect for the child, liberty within limits and the encouragement of self motivation and independence.
Within a Montessori environment children are taught individually
or in small groups geared to the child’s developmental level and interests. The Montessori philosophy is non-competitive and is based on freedom of movement and choice. Children work at their
own pace with the aim being to encourage active, self-directed learning. | |
